Why Revit?

AutoCAD is an excellent CADD program, but REVIT is the next generation in Architectural Design and production documents. One of the new "buzz" words that is making it way into the work place is "BIM". Building Information Management (BIM) is going to be the way of the future. And, REVIT is the program that will be the program of choice for architectural applications.

REVIT is a full 3D, parametric CADD program, which allows the user to design, create, and publish the contract documents to the client, consultants, building officials, and construction management teams in the field. The term "parametric" refers to the programs capabilities of linking everything in the drawing file to every other element in the same drawing file.

Take for instance, a door inserted into a fully functional 3D wall assemble. The door will have user-defined properties that include size, material, finish, etc. Likewise, the wall assemble will have it's own properties that depict it's construction. Combining the two elements into a composite assemble links the two objects parametrically. Any effect on one of the objects will directly effect the other component in the assemble.

Make a change in the door will automatically make a modification in the wall. Not only is the wall and door assemble affected, but also any other aspect attached to the overall 3D model, that could be affected by the wall / door connection will be adjusted accordingly.

The individual components can be portrayed in many different locations in the drawing file. Walls show up in plan view, exterior elevation view, in the sections, wall sections, details, data base documents tied to material take-offs... everywhere possible in the drawing file. Same with the individual doors that are inserted into those walls.

Make a change to one of the elements in one location, and that modification will be made in every other location in the design documents where that component shows up. Change the door size in the door schedule, and the door size will automatically modify in plan view, exterior elevation, sections... everywhere! Similar, make a change to a door on the exterior elevation, and that change shows up (accurately) in every other location in the drawing file that shows that particular door.

This same concept holds true with every component attached to the drawing, regardless if it is made during the design stage, or during the contract document phase, or even during construction. A change is a change, and that change is depicted everywhere... everywhere!
