Building the Future of Business

With the goal of achieving LEED Silver certification or higher forMcCord Hall, the W. P. Carey School of Business takes a leadership position in integrated environmental sustainability, reflecting the aspirations of ASU and the student body. While the height and scale of the building relate to the adjacent context, the orientation and massing are designed to reduce solar exposure in the hot, arid Arizona climate. The project will incorporate a retractable fabric roof over the courtyard, fa├žade design sensitive to solar orientation, and strategically placed water features and water retention gardens in major outdoor gathering spots to collect and reuse water on the site and to enhance thermal comfort for all building users. The building materials, including terracotta, speak to the area’s natural surroundings just as high-performance enclosure materials and mechanical systems utilizing earth ducts and chilled beams will help to minimize overall energy use requirements and long-term operating costs.

Sustainability

The new building and renovations will feature the latest in sustainable and ecologically sensitive design and technology.
  • 30% less water and 35% less energy than similar facilities
  • A solar array that returns power to the campus grid
  • More than 75% of construction waste diverted from landfill
  • 1. Tree trunks will become firewood to save other trees from being cut down, while other tree trunks are being repurposed as art in one of ASU’s wood turning class

    2. Tree branches and foliage will be composted by Singh Farms and returned to campus for use as fertilizer

    3. Asphalt and concrete will be recycled at an inert material landfill where it will be crushed and used for many different things in the future

    4. Metal will be taken to a metal salvage yard and recycled
